A Whole Piñata-Full of Auxiliary Capacities
At various times in my life I have explored many, many different disciplines. Some of them I did long enough or well enough to get paid for, some of them I'm just starting with, and some of them are only of archaeological interest. Many of them I enjoyed, and would be interested in enjoying again. In the words of Miss Teen South Carolina, such as:
Stuff I'm Learning
- 3d Modelling
- So far all of my fun has been with VectorWorks. I love the liberation of being able to set down complex three-dimensional ideas in extraordinary detail. My unrealized contraptions often rattle around in my head for years, draining attention as I keep their shapes in mind. Learning how to dump these objects out of my head has been thoroughly satisfying. Soon I would like to learn Rhino 3d so that I can draw boats.
- Electronics
- I made a few Games of Life from LadyAda's wonderful kits and it was fun, but the real galactic domination won't start until I build myself an Arduino and go free form. Soon, soon.
Stuff I'm Good At
- Copy Editing
- This is a perfect garden for the flourishing of my perfectionism. I have polished writing across a wide array of styles, from financial documentation to personal correspondence to screenplays to poetry.
- Video Editing
- Final Cut Pro and I get along very well. I keep my projects meticulously organized, I'm fast, and I work to consistently high standards. I have edited advertising for television broadcast, short films, and documentation of theatre for publicity and submission to major foundations.
- Graphic Design
- Most of my work in this area falls under the rubric of web development, but I have also produced a consistent stream of business cards, letterheads, envelopes, invitations, flyers, postcards, and posters over the years.
- Electrical
- I have performed a wide variety of permanent electrical work in homes and institutions, as well as working for many years as a lighting technician in the entertainment and events industry.
- Plumbing
- I have performed a number of total kitchen and bath replacements, and can handle any repair or replacement of common plumbing fixtures, including sinks, faucets, toilets, showers, baths, dishwashers, washer/dryers, inline or under-cabinet water filters, icemakers, stoves, and refrigerators.
- Carpentry
- I began building theatrical scenery at the age of fourteen, and continued in that industry for over a decade. Lately I have turned my woodworking to raw space build-outs, custom built-in furniture, and conventional domestic remodeling.
- Networking
- I am adept at installing and configuring both wired and wireless LANs. I keep hundreds of feet of cat5e organized, terminate and test it, deploy routers and switches, and keep wireless networks secure and humming.
- Metalwork
- I have experience in steel fabrication with standard structural shapes as well as with found materials. My primary metalworking strengths are in traditional blacksmithing and MIG welding.
Despite having spent years as a carpenter, I prefer to work with metal. - ETC Express Lighing Consoles
- In keeping with the omnivorous geekery here, I know the Express series quite well, and enjoy programming these versatile boards.
Stuff I've Retired From
- Theatre
- I earned a BFA in Independent Theatre Studies from Boston University, and started my own theatre company soon after graduation (the website-fossil dates from about 2003). From 2001 to 2005 I produced a series of new works in Boston and New York, in venues ranging from Boston's underground Pan 9 to downtown Manhattan's Here. Our most significant production, Hunger Dreams, premiered September 2002 in the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts under their Spotlight Program, and at the Brooklyn Lyceum in New York. I wrote, directed, produced, and designed all of our productions. We were a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
